Strongbones and Miss Universe GB handed over £6,000 to children’s services at Queens Hospital thanks to the tremendous fundraising of all the contestants. The Money will be split between different wards to help improve the lives of children suffering with Bone Cancer, Brittle Bone Disease, Scoliosis and all conditions of the bone.
The children were excited to receive a surprise visit at their bedside from some of the contestants. Children were trying their crowns on , playing fifa with them and chatting away. The staff spoke to the contestants about how the money was to be spent, and took them on a tour around the wards.
The Money is to be put towards the purchase of two new pioneering handheld paediatric cast saws for the plaster room. The hospitals current saw is very large and loud, causing the children a lot of stress when removing their casts. The new cast saws are brand new on the market and are small and discreet with minimal vibration and will enable the process of removing plaster casts from babies much easier. The Plaster team came along to meet the girls to personally thank them as they are so grateful for their new equipment.
Games consoles including Xbox’s and playstation 3’s are to be purchased for the ACAD ward. Many children on the wards can be in considerable pain and spend many days or weeks on the ward. Providing them with entertainment will greatly improve their hospital experience by helping them get through what is a difficult time in there lives.
TV/DVD and Trolleys for the children’s ward are also to be provided. These items will ensure their stay is as pleasant as possible whilst undergoing painful treatment. Children with bone conditions find it impossible to leave their beds to attend the play rooms for respite , so bedside entertainment will make a huge difference to their welfare. A range of DVD’s will also be purchased to cater for all ages.
Bravery Presents are also to be purchased as they play a key role in helping the children get through a painful or scary treatment. Items to be purchased are fairy wings, toy cars and my little ponies.
Colourful stethoscopes and over small items of equipment are to be purchased. This enables the wards and doctors to be less clinical and as much fun as possible. Colouring kits are also to be purchased, allowing the children to spend time at their beds making works of art to be displayed on the wards around them.
