We attended our first trip to Bendrigg Activity Centre in the Lake District in summer where we took 64 people for an inclusive weekend of adrenalin filled action. Bendrigg is a fully accessible activity centre suitable for children with all disabilities. The weekend included accommodation with full wheelchair access and track hoists in each room, also containing profile beds and changing places. Activities involved zip-lining, abseiling, wall climbing, canoeing, caving, and extreme swinging. The “yes I can” ethos of the centre meant that all children were able to take part in these activities, even those with the most complex of needs i.e. oxygen or tracheostomy. Evenings consisted of a sensory disco, camp fire singalongs with marshmallow toasting and inclusive games such as boccia. Bendrigg is one of the only places in the UK where disabled children can take part together with their siblings. It was a weekend of total inclusion, pushing boundaries, experiencing new adventures and forging lifelong friendships and support networks. We cannot wait to go back hopefully again and again to give all our families an opportunity to attend.
